An eastern Africa regional workshop on e-scrap management discussed issues related to effective electronic scrap management and the development of strategies to reach the zero waste goals regarding e-scrap in the East African Communications Organisation (EACO) member states by 2030. The three-day event held in the Rwandan capital Kigali 14- 16 May was organised by the East African Communications Organisation (EACO), the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) and Enviroserve Rwanda. Participants included policymakers, environmental experts, telecommunication companies and other interested parties from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Burundi. The participants sought to promote a multi-stakeholder collaboration on e-scrap and provide sustainable ways to manage such waste in the region. As per a press statement by RURA, the workshop evaluated the status of the regional strategy on e-scrap management. The participants engaged in topics on regulations awareness, distribution of mechanisms for successful strategy execution, and approaches to enhance stakeholder collaboration in the pursuit of hazard-free e-waste management in the region. E-waste is already a serious problem in many countries around the world. Not only does e-scrap cause significant damage to our natural environment, but it also severely threatens the health and wellbeing of people. According to experts, there is need to advance electronic and electrical scrap management and support strategies to protect more than 150 million citizens of East African Community member countries from the dangers of e-scrap.
