Intel is committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in its global operations by 2040, said Ahmed Ibrahim, Director, Global Business Development, Service Providers, Intel, during a press meet in Dubai. Intel intends to achieve this by reducing its carbon footprint, increasing energy efficiency in its facilities and products and building sustainable infrastructures.

Taking into account the greenhouse emission across the supply chain – from raw material extraction to distribution and use of product –  Ibrahim said that Intel's net-zero goals will focus on Scope 1 and 2 emissions. He said 90% of the carbon footprint of a technology company is attributed to operational level emission, while the rest to the embodied level.

Ibrahim explained the initiatives taken by Intel over the years. By 2030, it intends to achieve 100% renewable power usage across its global operations and increase product energy efficiency by 10 times for client and server microprocessors. “Over the last decade, we avoided 75% of our greenhouse gas emissions due to our actions such as chemical substitution, process optimisation, energy conservation, and investments in renewable electricity.”

Talking about Intel’s role in creating solutions for the entire technology ecosystem, he said that Intel collaborates with its global supply chain to offer guidance, AI and  telemetry solutions, software tools to optimise efficiency and to facilitate low carbon servers.

“Awareness among the public and collaboration within the ecosystem are the two major challenges that businesses and organisations across the world face in their journey towards circular economy,”he said.
