As part of the Ministry of Climate Change & Environment initiative aimed at making the UAE free from plastic bags, Ajman Municipality and Planning Department has announced on X the ban on using single-use plastic bags in all shopping centres and sales outlets in the Emirate of Ajman, effective from January 2024.
"The law comes in accordance with Ministerial Decision No. (380) of the year 2022 regarding the regulation of single-use products in the state’s markets, and in compliance with Federal Law No. (2) of the year 2018 concerning integrated waste management, and as part of the Ministry of Climate Change & Environment, initiative aimed at making the UAE free from plastic bags," the statement read.
It has also released the specifications for the reusable bags that are allowed. "The thickness of the bag should be higher than 50 microns if it is made of plastic; The bags must have a handle that does not expand and is attached to the bag in a way that allows the bag to meet standards for durability and strength; The bag’s capacity should not be less than 15 liters."
