The Middle East Paper Co. (MEPCO), a leading vertically integrated paper manufacturer, headquartered in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, has made significant strides in championing the circular economy in the Middle East through various environmentally-conscious initiatives. Speaking to Waste & Recycling magazine, its Group President Sami Al Safran threw light on the company’s recent achievements and the vision for the future.
MEPCO offers a diverse range of containerboard and specialty paper products for the packaging, construction, furniture and paper core industries worldwide. With a strong base in the KSA and other countries in the GCC, its global footprint has extended to more than 50 nations including those in Africa, South Asia, the Americas and Europe. The company’s innovative approach – including energy- and water-efficient production – enables it to deliver significant environmental and economic benefits to its home market. Through WASCO, its wholly-owned subsidiary, MEPCO sources raw material from across the Kingdom, ensuring a secure supply while providing measurable value to the Saudi economy.
How has the company evolved in recent years?
Al Safran highlighted the company's commitment to sustainability. “We have always gone the extra mile to reduce carbon footprint and recycle water to mitigate environmental impacts, " he said. “Since the last two years, MEPCO has been
publishing the ESG report, disclosing its environmental, social, and governance performance and it has consistently excelled in ESG benchmarks, positioning the company as the leader in the industry,” Al Safran stated, adding that he has been advocating the importance of ESG reporting.
He pointed out that Saudi Vision 2030 has set the bar higher for reducing environmental impact and that ESG reporting and efficient management of waste are some of the ways to reach the goal. “With the KSA targeting landfill diversion of 94 per cent, there is immense pressure on the waste management companies to reevaluate their efforts and redefine their approach.”
Al Safran shared key milestones, including the establishment of a public-private partnership with the Jeddah Municipality. Recently, WASCO signed a partnership agreement with Jeddah Development & Urban Regeneration Co. (JUDRC) to establish a limited liability Estidama Environmental Services Company), to develop the waste management market in the city of Jeddah, and its suburbs. “This partnership aims to create business opportunities while aligning with the circular economy principles,” he said. The company has also initiated the fleet monitoring system, which includes measuring carbon footprint of raw material movement.
What new sustainable products/services are being developed?
MEPCO is in the process of expanding its paper mill which will contribute to doubling its production in recycling containerboard products, a significant step in the company’s dedication to the circular economy. “This expansion will effectively double our capacity for treating and recycling Old Corrugated Containers (OCC). We are keen on building the network capability of raw material supplies. What sets this project apart is our commitment to consider energy-efficient solutions to power the mill, thereby reducing our carbon footprint.” Additionally, the company is also implementing a state-of-the-art water treatment system to ensure minimal or zero discharge into the environment.
MEPCO is currently engaged in collaborative efforts with various government entities for providing integrated waste management solutions. “This is in alignment with our efforts to contribute to the broader sustainability objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 and to be the leading champion of ‘Made in Saudi’ sustainable products. We work towards becoming the largest contributor to the circular paper economy, ensuring sustainable growth, and maximizing stakeholder value,” he added.
He emphasized the importance of continuous investment in waste recovery, especially with Saudi Arabia recycling less than 50 per cent of its paper consumption.
WASCO is expanding its network of recycling centres to make it convenient for businesses and individuals to recycle materials. “Right now, we operate over 18 receiving & recycling centres. We plan to open several more in the near future.”
What are your circular economy initiatives in the last 12 months?
MEPCO has made significant investments in waste reduction initiatives, working closely with various government entities. “These efforts have included extensive public awareness campaigns aimed at educating and engaging the public on sustainable waste management practices. By fostering a culture of waste reduction, we are contributing to a more sustainable future,” he said.
Al Safran discussed ongoing initiatives, such as collaboration with FMCG companies for recycling. “As part of our commitment to the circular economy, we have established partnerships with many FMCG and packaging companies. Together, we are working to build an ecosystem that streamlines the efficient collection of recyclables directly from their sources. This initiative aims to improve the entire recycling process, ensuring that valuable materials are repurposed effectively.”
Where do you want your business to be in 2024?
“We have set the strategy forward to become a regional waste management leader. We aim to be recognised in the market as an integrated solution provider.”
