OQ, Oman’s global integrated energy group, has been advancing environmental initiatives in recent years. What are some of the key green initiatives and what’s driving this approach?

At OQ, sustainability is an integral part of our mission. It’s at the heart of all we do, from product development to recyclability. We are committed to delivering better solutions and ensuring that sustainability is embedded in everything we do. By collaborating with our customers, we aim to address global challenges through innovation and sustainable practices.

For example, we have developed 16 value-added grades designed to tackle global challenges. One such innovation is our Luban LL-8446.21, Linear Low Density Polyethylene, which is tailored for water storage applications, particularly in regions facing water scarcity. This product not only addresses storage needs but also promotes more efficient water usage.

(Launched in Dubai in January, Luban LL-8446.21 is an advanced rotomoulding-grade polymer designed to tackle critical water scarcity challenges. The product is suitable for recycling using modern methods.  According to OQ’s press statement, rotomoulded articles produced from OQ Luban LL-8446.21 offer excellent environmental stress crack resistance (ESCR) and weatherability, making them a sustainable alternative to other materials.)

We have been part of the “Be the Change” programme by the Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA).  The initiative aims to instill long-term environmental awareness in young students, preparing them to tackle global sustainability challenges. We have engaged with 19 schools, with the goal of empowering future leaders to champion sustainability efforts. We see this as an essential step in aligning Oman with GCC’s broader sustainability goals.

What innovations or projects is your company focusing on for the future?

Innovation at OQ begins by listening to our customers. We focus on creating products that address their needs while contributing to global sustainability goals. Like I mentioned earlier, our latest innovation LL-8446.21 supports applications like agriculture and large tanks, enabling better resource management.

On the operational side, we have implemented cutting-edge technologies such as the recent launch of Oman’s largest private cloud ERP deployment, our e-Symphony project.  This system centralises data, enhances operational efficiency, enables real-time analytics and empowers data-driven decision-making. Additionally, our Marsad Integrated Management System  has centralised critical data sources into a unified platform, automating processes and standardising workflows. This has allowed real-time visibility into KPIs, reduced manual intervention, and  further drives efficiency across our operations.

Could you provide an update on the Ladayn Polymer Park and the efforts to attract foreign investment and foster innovation hubs?

Beyond providing innovative solutions, OQ has focused on fostering an environment conducive to collaboration and investment. Ladayn Polymer Park represents a cornerstone of OQ's efforts to grow the domestic market and create a supportive ecosystem for its partners. It is focused on helping the sultanate become self-sufficient in plastic products and boost its presence in the international plastics market.

A critical aspect of Ladayn Park is its role as a dedicated zone for direct foreign investment. This initiative capitalises on Oman’s strategic geographic location, strong relationships with multiple countries, and advantageous free trade agreements. These factors collectively make it an ideal hub for regional and international businesses.

To date, Ladayn Park has facilitated the signing of 16 agreements, amounting to over $154.4 million in investments. This could result in the creation of approximately 650 jobs.

Three of the companies we signed agreements with last year have already started on-site construction, showcasing the trust and confidence placed in this initiative. This development highlights the region's potential as a hub for innovation and sustainability.

Can you summarise how sustainability is integrated into your operations and products?

From product innovation to operational excellence, sustainability is our guiding principle. Whether it’s creating value-added grades to tackle global challenges or adopting advanced technology to enhance operational efficiency, we strive to align our efforts with both customer needs and environmental goals. Our holistic approach ensures that we contribute meaningfully to sustainability while driving growth and innovation.
